There is a large disconnect between the women in American media, and the average American women.  Although there has been a growing trend of average sized women represented, over two-thirds of women in the media are still at least 15% slimmer then the average American woman. (Claudia Barriga 2009)  The actual effects of this phenomenon are hard to measure, yet it is proven that this unrealistic representation leads to unwarranted, poor body image, increased rates of depression, eating disorders, and cosmetic surgery, and the perceptions of women, formed from the media, can even effect females in the professional world.  Even with these consequences, the entertainment industry continues to mainly feature unrealistic women, often times enhancing there images with technology to a level impossible to obtain.
